Committed to Community
Sundaze recognizes that in becoming a part of the Tewksbury community, it must gain and sustain local support. Supporting the community is of utmost importance, and Sundaze will continue to search for ways to positively impact the town in which we do business. Sundaze intends to be part of the community long term and will follow initiatives to demonstrate collaboration with local vendors, employees, and nonprofits.
Sundaze will look to hire employees from the surrounding area and will contract with local vendors whenever possible, which will in turn support the local economy. Additionally, donations will be made to support non-profits and groups with aligned values whenever possible. More than just economic support, Sundaze will work with communities through educational programs, encouraging employee volunteering, and showing representation at local town council meetings.
Economic Impact
Massachusetts collects 17% sales tax for recreational use in the form of 10.75% excise tax and 6.25% sales tax. In the 2021 fiscal year, Massachusetts collected over $176 million dollars which marks the first time cannabis tax revenue has exceeded alcohol tax revenue. This tax benefit helps fund many Massachusetts programs.
In addition to the State tax, local cities and towns are allowed to collect up to 3% in additional tax which goes directly toward the city or town government. That additional tax revenue has been very beneficial to many cities and towns in the Commonwealth.
Social Equity
Massachusetts recently passed legislation that works toward Social Equity. The law works to establish minimum standards for host communities to promote and encourage participation in the cannabis industry by those disproportionately harmed by the War on Drugs.
The law also calls for the creation of a new Cannabis Equity Fund to address the societal inequities worsened by the War on Drugs. Those with previous criminal records related to the possession or cultivation of amounts of marijuana that have since been decriminalized would be able to petition for their expungement under the law.
It’s also mandated that 15% of the revenue collected by the Marijuana Regulation Fund be transferred to the Cannabis Equity Trust Fund to encourage participation in the industry through grants and loans to entrepreneurs from communities that have been disproportionately harmed by marijuana prohibition and related enforcement.
